Earth, Water, Sun and Wind, 2023
Western Sahara is home to some of the world’s largest phosphate reserves, abundant fishing banks, potential oil and gas resources, and has the capacity to generate sufficient renewable energy that could power the entire Maghreb region. However, the exploitation of these resources has raised concerns in the international community, particularly regarding the legal status of the region. According to international law, Western Sahara is considered to be under illegal occupation, with ongoing debates over its sovereignty. The profits generated from these operations primarily benefit those who have settled in the region, while Sahrawi people, many of whom live in refugee camps in Algeria, remain on the margins.
