Fragments II
What the map cuts up, the story cuts across
2019 - ongoing
In this work I document the present situation of four unrecognized or semi-recognized states, giving a more personal testimony to the multi-layered histories of these political entities. To this day, unrecognized states remain marginalized and are yet to “achieve the independence” they sought upon secession while shrinking as part of a divided and double standard international community that deliberately approves and disapproves their existence, depending on the power currents and agendas. Unrecognized states remain from an ideological and political standpoint on the margins of a global inclusion. This work documents in a semi-experimental and semi-fictional format, the overcoming influence of politics on the land within the borders of unrecognized, touching upon the notion of nation states and national identities vs ethnic and territorial identities from the perspective of "incompletion” or "failed states".
