Ilha Formosa, 2024
Taiwan’s relationship with China is deeply shaped by a complex colonial history, and tensions between the two remain significant today. Despite Taiwan’s self-governance, China continues to assert its claim over the island, considering it part of its territory. In 2004, China enacted a law that would authorize military action if Taiwan were to seek formal independence, further intensifying the strained relations and leaving Taiwan in a precarious political position. Any potential conflict over Taiwan has the potential to involve the United States, which is committed to assisting Taiwan’s defense, as well as allies such as Australia and Japan, raising the stakes for a broader regional conflict.
